In the sixties, Rothe began providing engineering and technical services such as research, design, development, manufacturing, installation, and maintenance for customers such as Ft. Sam Houston, Brooks AFB, Kelly AFB, and commercial entities. In 1976, Rothe began a relationship with the Engineering Directorate at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas. That support has continued through today with additional directorates on other contracts and in subcontract partnerships with major aerospace contractors supporting multiple NASA centers.

Project Management

Managers whose expertise is rooted in NASA’s flight hardware life cycle, engineering and analysis principles, safety and quality, and dedication to customer service. Our managers understand that our employees excel when their strengths are recognized, and the proper tools are provided for success.

Mechanical Design Engineering

Our engineers have decades of experience at NASA and commercial industries using computer-aided design (CAD) to design high and low-fidelity mockups of ISS Nodes, payloads, tools, and hardware for underwater pre-flight Extravehicular Activity (EVA) crew training. We also provide commercial space mockup vehicles with design solutions to maintain their vehicles for launch and recovery training.

Engineering Analysis

RDI provides structural analysis, including finite element analysis (FEA) for Class III through Class I flight hardware. In support of underwater environment engineering, we provide structural, buoyancy, and center of gravity (CG), tip-over, and hazard analyses to ensure the safe handling of mockups and to mitigate facility damage. Engineers review and/or prepare lift plans for various vehicle and mockup types being maneuvered by davit, jib, and/or overhead crane operations.

Manufacturing and Material Handling (MHE)

We have a technician support staff capable of manufacturing complex hardware using engineering drawings and CNC mills, lathes, water knives, sheet metal brakes, laser cutters, and 3D printing. Our welders must be capable of proficiently passing 6G weld tests and perform consistent TIG and MIG welding of stainless steel, aluminum, and carbon steel. We perform visual and Die Penetrant Inspections to ensure our welding quality is exceptional. We have certified operators of material handling equipment such as heavy forklifts, standard forklifts, and tugs to maneuver equipment, mockups, and materials as needed.

Facility Operations and Maintenance

Since 2003 we have provided resources and services to operate, maintain, and sustain mission-critical facilities at NASA Johnson Space Center. These services help promote and provide a safe environment for conducting crew operations critical to NASA’s mission. With high visibility facilities, we understand the importance of safety and professionalism in our duties to our workforce and customers.

Specialized Laboratory Services

We have technician support staff with decades of experience in clean room services meeting some of the highest oxygen cleanliness standards. The criticality of this work is not overstated as NASA crew depend on their life support equipment and divers depend on their equipment to be always 100% reliable and functional.

Underwater Pre-Flight Crew Training

Our role in support of pre-flight EVA crew training involves breathing gas systems technicians and professional diving staff. Our Topside, Utility, and Safety Divers closely monitor underwater test subjects’ state of health, facilitate operating needs, and communicate associated risks with the test team to ensure the safety of the test subject while maintaining an acceptable test flow.
